Disability Representation in Books

July is Disability Pride Month.

If you’re new here, the 3 of us behind Fablefern collect chronic illnesses and disabilities like grandmothers collect those tiny spoons. We’re always looking for books with good representation that we can share with you, and wanted a place we could keep updating when we find more – so here we are!

Why Disability Representation in Books Matters

Even back when Fablefern was just a dream between best friends, we knew our goal was to help everyone find themselves between the pages of a book. Representation of all types has always been at the forefront of everything we do.

Seeing your disability reflected in the pages of a book helps you feel less alone. It helps put words to what you’re feeling, and strengthens understanding and compassion in people who don’t share your lived experience.

We’re firm believers in diversifying our bookshelves, to help us learn, grow, and become more empathetic and supportive people.

Books with Disability Representation

We are working on moving all of the book recommendations we’ve gathered to our blog, so there is a permanent space we can keep updating and adding more books.

Our Books with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Representation list is already live, and throughout July, we plan to share lots more. They will be posted on our social media (like this) and also each get their own spot on the blog.

We’re always looking to add more, so if you have suggestions, please reach out!
