We’re so happy you’re here!
Fablefern Bookshop is the culmination of 20 years of friendship and a deep and passionate love of books. We've been passing books back and forth for two decades and in between crying over boys, sleepovers, and school assignments, our noses were always in a good read.
It is the absolute joy of our lives to bring you amazing secondhand books, bookish accessories, and more! We can’t wait to introduce you to your next favourite read.
Our Values
Fablefern was built on four core values: Diversity, Sustainability, Accessibility, and Imagination. We are constantly striving to fulfil our vision and find ways to improve.
Diversity
At Fablefern, we believe that reading is for everyone. We hope that everyone who is exposed to Fablefern feels that it is a safe space. We hope you are able to see yourself in the books and products we carry. We’ll never tolerate hate towards marginalized groups and hope that in doing so we create a space where people feel welcome and accepted.
Sustainability
We chose to centre our business around secondhand books as a small way of helping the environment. We all have a responsibility to do our best to protect our planet, and we want to give new life to previously-loved books. Even if we can help to keep a few books out of landfills by putting them in the hands of readers, we believe that is a small way that we can do better in our world.
We strive to incorporate sustainable practices in every aspect of our business.
Shipping: Our bags, packing paper, wrapping, tags, boxes, and rigid mailers are all made of recyclable materials, and we use carbon-neutral shipping options via Canada Post.
Product: Our stickers are printed with GreenGuard eco friendly inks. We strive to carry products with the least environmental impacts (for example, our bookmarks are printed on cardstock and not plastic or acrylic), and we are always seeking ways to do better.
Accessibility
We believe that everyone should have access to books. At Fablefern, we aim to support this goal in a few ways.
Fablefern exists to help fill the gap between libraries and big box stores. Our books are priced fairly and are in great condition to ensure that they are accessible to readers of all ages. We actively support our school libraries and educators to ensure schools have access to affordable books for students.
We are also fierce supporters of the disabled and chronic illness communities, and are always seeking ways to better support these groups. We sell audiobooks as an alternative to physical books, and seek out large-print books to help those with vision-related disabilities. We love to share reading recommendations with all types of representation, and have some very exciting changes in the works to better support our community.
Imagination
And perhaps at the deepest heart of Fablefern, we exist to inspire your imagination. The ability to read and learn the stories and experiences of others is what allows us to become more compassionate and empathetic people. We hope that your experience with Fablefern and every book that you read is that you’re left with the knowledge to understand those around you and to help your community become a better place.
